Jordan BlanchetteJordan BlanchetteGULF SHORES, Ala. -- Daphne took advantage of two Foley errors on one play in the fourth inning to score three runs and break open a tie game en route to a 10-4 win Wednesday night in the Hank Aaron Classic.

With runners on first and second and the score tied 3-3, Daphne's Jordan Blanchette hit the ball to right field, where it was misplayed. Both runners scored and Blanchette was able to reach home due to an errant throw to third base.

Dillon Schaniel got his first career win, going four innings and allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Sam Gresham gave up a run in one inning of relief and Tyler Berridge tossed two scoreless innings for the Trojans.

"We had some young pitchers on the mound; the first two pitchers have not had any varsity experience, so they did a good job," said DHS coach Joe Hutchins, whose team improved to 3-0. "It's a learning experience. They've got to work on getting ahead in counts and working the game a little faster, but I thought they did a good job for their first time out."

Jamin Graham (0-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits over four innings with two strikeouts and four walks.

Foley (2-1) got within two with a run in the top of the fifth, but Daphne answered with a run in its half of the inning and added three more in the sixth.

Tyler Powell drove in two runs for Daphne and Kyle Reese had a RBI triple. Schaniel, Russ Mosley and Berridge also drove in one run each for the Trojans.

Taylor Wheaton, Zach Hughes and Eric Fontaine had one RBI apiece for the Lions, who play Mary Montgomery at 7 p.m. tonight at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.

Daphne's perfect showing in regional site play will allow the Trojans a shot to claim the tourney title. Daphne plays Fairhope at 7 p.m. Monday at Hank Aaron Stadium with the winner advancing to Tuesday's championship game.

"We're going to play a real good team next time. It's going to be somebody that's 3-0 and we're going to have to play better," Hutchins said. "Tonight, we made a couple of errors and we let (Foley) get a couple of rallies and did a couple of things we shouldn't have done. But all in all, we played OK. But we know from now on, our schedule gets really tough. We're going to have to step up our game and have a couple of days of good practice and be ready to go."

Baldwin Register: Pitching is key for Daphne

February 14, 2010, 4:44AM

DAPHNE, Ala. -- After graduating the majority of its standout pitchers after a 29-11 season a year ago that ended in the second round of the playoffs, Daphne's baseball team will rely on youth on the mound in 2010.

"Our young pitchers are going to have to mature quickly and it's a year that we must find a consistent offense," said Daphne coach Joe Hutchins, in his eighth year at the helm of the program. "We can't win 1-0 games or 2-1 decisions like we have been the past couple of years. We graduated our top three pitchers and need to find a new rotation. Our staff will be young and experienced."

The team will rely on nine seniors, six juniors and three sophomores during this year's campaign. Some of the players expected to make an impact include senior shortstop Jordan Blanchette, junior second baseman/pitcher Kyle Reese, senior catcher Corey Henning, junior utility player Taylor Elmore, sophomore pitcher Brett Langley, junior pitcher/utility player Dillon Schaniel, senior outfielder Jared Olson, senior outfielder Cameron Peterson, senior pitcher/first baseman Jordan Thornhill, senior outfielder/first baseman Tyler Powell, junior first baseman/designated hitter Blake Taylor, senior pitcher Sam Gresham; junior pitcher/third baseman Russ Mosley, sophomore pitcher/outfielder Brandon Peterson, sophomore catcher Ryan Lane, senior third baseman Dakota Ehmka, junior outfielder Roger Lavoie, and senior pitcher/utility player Ty Berridge.
Hutchins said that his team's work ethic has been good so far.

"Our desire seems to be the biggest strength this team has shown over the off-season," he said. "Our players work hard and they want to compete."

Getting into the postseason again won't be an easy feat.

"We won the area last year," said Hutchins, talking about how the Trojans are sandwiched into the 6A Area 4 with Satsuma, Baldwin County and McGill-Toolen. "I have no idea which team will be favored this year, we are all competitive and capable of making a run."

Generally, Daphne has made a history of getting to the playoffs though, having posted a 29-11 record in 2008 and getting all the way to the quarterfinals and finishing with a 31-5 mark in 2007 and making it all the way to the second round of the postseason.

Since 2003, the Trojans have an overall record of 177-67, posted an 87-27 area mark and won three straight area titles.

The team opens up their 2010 campaign Monday at 4 p.m. against Robertsdale in the opening round of the Hank Aaron Classic.

Fairhope, Daphne split, stage set for Game 3

DAPHNE — In a series featuring explosive offenses and dominating pitchers, defense proved to be the difference as No. 2-ranked Fairhope and sixth-ranked Daphne split their 6A second-round playoff series Friday night.

The Trojans (27-10) won the opener 1-0 with the lone run coming on an error. The Pirates (31-9) took advantage of three Daphne errors during a five-run second inning en route to a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

The decisive game will be played at noon today. Fairhope will send Peyton Fuller (4-0) to the hill while the Trojans counter with Jake Maske (4-2).

"The first game, we played flawlessly," said Daphne coach Joe Hutchins. "We got a great effort on the mound and it didn't take much. They made a mistake, we got a run and that's really all Mason (Hutchins) needed. The second game, shoot, that one inning ... giving them five runs that one inning was a little too much to come back."

Hutchins (7-0), a senior, needed only 56 pitches to complete a three-hit shutout in the 65-minute opener.

The Trojans' Connor Reese drew a two-out walk in the fourth and later scored when Fairhope's Will Hall mishandled Eric Britain's single to center field.

Daryl Norris (8-2) took the loss, fanning six and walking one in six innings. He gave up just two hits, both to Britain.

"We hit some balls at them and hit way too many balls in the air," Fairhope coach Stu Fuller said of the opener. "I thought we did better the second ballgame. They made a couple of mistakes that extended that inning; that hurt them. I was proud of our kids for battling back."

FHS sent nine batters to the plate during the five-run second inning in the nightcap. The Pirates got two runs directly on errors while Hall and Dusty Baker drove in runs with singles and Wes Kent brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.

Daphne scored three runs in the fifth, the first two coming on Brandon Peterson's triple down the right-field line. Fairhope starter Ashton Johnson was pulled later in the inning for Cody Ethridge, who gave up an RBI single to Jordan Blanchette.

Johnson (5-3) allowed three runs on three hits. Ethridge threw the final three innings, fanning four and allowing two hits to record his fourth save. Reese (7-4) went the distance for the Trojans, allowing seven hits.

Daphne sweeps Foley

DAPHNE — Big offensive innings at the start of both games propelled Daphne to an 8-5 and 7-1 doubleheader sweep of Foley in the first round of the 6A state playoffs Friday afternoon.

The No. 6-ranked Trojans (26-9) will host No. 2 Fairhope on Friday in the second round.

"We came out of the box both games swinging the bats well and making (Foley) play deep and put some balls in the gap and were able to get ahead of them," said Daphne coach Joe Hutchins. "But after that, we got flat. Both games, we gave them opportunities."

In the opener, Daphne jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and Connor Reese (7-3) held the Lions to one hit in six innings. The Trojans went ahead 8-0 in the fourth on a two-run, four-base error when Mason Hutchins' fly ball bounced out of the glove of Foley center fielder Tayler Bishop and rolled to the fence as Bishop narrowly avoided a collision with right fielder Zane Brewer.

The Lions' Taylor Wheaton hit a two-run triple to spark a five-run seventh inning against DHS reliever Russ Mosley.

Reese also had two doubles and two RBIs for the Trojans. Wheaton went the distance for Foley (9-21), allowing nine hits and striking out nine.

Daphne took control of the second game with a five-run first inning that included a two-run single from Tyler Powell and Mosley's RBI triple.

Jacob Maske (4-2) went the distance, allowing four hits, fanning seven and walking one. Justin Anderson suffered the loss, yielding nine hits in seven innings. He also went 3-for-3 with an RBI single in the fifth.

Trojans claim 6A Area 4 baseball title

Daphne boys clinch championship after beating BCHS in three-game series

Sports Correspondents
Daphne's baseball team has clinched the 6A Area 4 championship.

The Trojans won two out of three games in a series with Baldwin County High over the weekend. Daphne knocked off the Tigers 7-0 in the opener before losing 2-1 in the nightcap in a doubleheader in Bay Minette on Friday night. The Trojans rebounded at home Saturday morning and sealed the area crown with a 10-0 five-inning runaway victory.

Daphne improves to 23-7 overall with the win while the Trojans finish their 6A Area 4 slate at 6-3, while Baldwin County is 18-8 overall and 5-3 in the area race. The Tigers still have a game with Satsuma to play but even if BCHS wins that contest to knot the area race up at 6-3, Daphne would be the winner thanks to head-to-head competition against Baldwin County, having won two out of three games in the series.

Baldwin County squeezed into the second playoff spot in the area by clinching the No. 2 spot in the 6A Area 4, though the Tigers had to wait until Saturday night to find out if they were in. If Satsuma had swept McGill-Toolen on Saturday evening, then a contest with the Gators would have had to determine which team captured the No. 2 postseason slot. A split or a sweep by McGill-Toolen meant the Tigers were in. The Yellow Jackets ended up beating the Gators in both games, winning 10-8 and 10-3 to give BCHS the berth.

Following are briefs on each of the contests between Daphne and Baldwin County:

Daphne 7, BCHS 0

Mason Hutchins was a one-man wrecking crew in game one on Friday night as the righthander allowed just one hit in taking the pitching win and helped his own cause with a three-hit, three-RBI performance at the plate as Daphne won 7-0 over Baldwin County. Hutchins had a two-run homer in the first inning, then doubled in another run in the second stanza. He added a second double in the fourth inning. Hutchins also struck out six batters in his complete game win.

Brandon Peterson added a two-run single for the Trojans, while Tyler Powell and Conner Reese also knocked runs in. Jake Maske added two doubles and a single for Daphne at the plate.

For BCHS, Trace Zarr had the only hit, a third inning single to right field. Zarr also took the loss on the mound for the Tigers.

BCHS 2, Daphne 1

Brett Langham's RBI single capped a two-run bottom of the sixth inning for Baldwin County and enabled the Tigers to gain a split over Daphne on Friday night as BCHS won 2-1 in the nightcap. Langham's single drove in Demetrius Coley who had tied the game moments earlier with an RBI triple to deep center field that plated Jansen Boeschen home.

Daniel Robinson (now 6-2 on the mound), who limited the Trojans to just three hits, then retired the Daphne batters in the seventh inning to finish off the complete game victory.

Things started out close.

Reese and Robertson hooked up in a good pitching duel with the only damage done in the first 5cm HALF innings being a Russ Mosley towering solo home run to lead off the third stanza that gave the Trojans the 1-0 advantage. That was the only scoring until the Tigers' heroics in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Powell and Jordan Blanchette had the other Daphne hits, while Zarr, Robinson, Lee Bush and Boeschen had the four Tiger hits until Coley and Langham came through in the sixth inning.

"Once again, we were beat in the first game (of a series) but found a way to come back and win the next one," said Bezeredi. "Daniel Robertson pitched an outstanding game for us."

Daphne 10, BCHS 0

Daphne pounded out the hits Saturday morning, though, as the Trojans easily clinched the 6A Area 4 title with the dominating 10-0 victory over BCHS in five innings.

"I'm absolutely proud of these kids," said Daphne coach Joe Hutchins. "I'm as proud of them as any team that I've coached. We had to struggle early on to get runs (at the beginning of the season) but our pitching and our defense has always been there. I told them this morning before the game that the contest was in their hands, that they had to come in, swing the bats and they would win. Every inning, they put together some rallies and I'm proud of that."

Jake Maske (3-2) earned the win on the mound for Daphne, tossing all five innings as he allowed two hits and struck out six batters. "He was on," said Hutchins of Maske. "He threw four pitchers for strikes, he had his fastball, curveball, changeup and slider working."

Bezeredi said Maske was tough. "He did an outstanding job of keeping us

off-balance," said Bezeredi. "We had a chance to get a run in the first inning and we didn't do it with runners in scoring position. Their pitcher pretty much dominated things. We have to put this game behind us now."

Boeschen (2-2 on the mound) only lasted a third of an inning throwing and gave up two hits and four runs but walked the first two batters of the contest.

At the plate, the Trojans were led by Jordan Thornhill, who had a huge three-run double; by Blanchette who had a double and an RBI single; by Hutchins who had two singles; by Eric Britain who had a two-run single, a sacrifice fly and another single and by Maske and Reese who each had a single. For the Tigers, Boeschen had a double, while Zarr added a single.

Daphne takes series

Trojans are now 13-4 overall and 2-1 in 6A Area 4 baseball play
Monday, March 16, 2009
By DAVID LEE
Sports Correspondent

Daphne's baseball team won two out of three games against Satsuma over the weekend.

The first win came on the road Friday night as the Trojans notched a 10-4 victory. Then on Saturday morning at home the Daphne squad beat the Gators, 7-1, in the opening game of a doubleheader. In the second contest of the twin-bill, however, Satsuma roared back to take an 8-5 victory as the Trojans saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end. Still, Daphne is 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the 6A Area 4 race, while the Gators fall to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in the area race.

"To take two out of three games from a decent team was good but I was disappointed with how we played in the third game," said Daphne coach Joe Hutchins, talking about the series. "We didn't show up in that third game. The kids are young though and they played hard this weekend."

Following are briefs on each of the contests in the series:

Daphne 10, Satsuma 4

SATSUMA — Conner Reese (now 3-2 on the mound) was masterful in the game, almost going the distance as he tossed 6 innings, allowing seven hits, striking out seven batters and walking three in the contest as Daphne won 10-4.

The Gators couldn't do much at all at the plate until the seventh inning when Reese was getting tired as his pitch count continued to climb.

"Conner pitched really well for us in the game," said Hutchins. "He got a little tired at the end of the game but he gave us a chance to win."

At the plate, the Trojans pounded out hit after hit, a lot of them for extra bases.

"We had rallies in just about every inning against Satsuma in that first game," said Hutchins. "Our kids had a lot of clutch hits."

Overall, the Trojans had 14 hits as Russ Mosley led the way with two doubles, a single and three RBIs; Tyler Powell had two singles and two RBIs; Jared Olson had a single and a double; Brandon Peterson had a single and a double; Eric Britain had a double and two singles; Mason Hutchins added two singles and an RBI; Jordan Blanchette and Reese each had a double and Jake Maske had a single. For the Gators, Bryant Howell had two singles; Jared Brannon had three singles; Cody Broadus had a double; Jacob Noble had an RBI single, while Steven Lumpkin and Johnathan Byrd each had a sacrifice fly.

For Satsuma, Jake Hyde (now 2-2 on the year) took the loss as he tossed four innings, giving up 10 hits, striking out one batter but walking two and hitting three.

Daphne 7, Satsuma 1

Mason Hutchins (now 3-0 on the mound) earned the victory early Saturday morning in Daphne as he tossed seven innings, striking out six batters, walking one and allowing four hits as the Trojans beat Satsuma 7-1.

"He threw a good game," said Hutchins of his son. "He was on and we came out hitting. We didn't really give them a chance to rally in the game and we played good defense."

At the plate, Mason Hutchins aided his cause with a double, a single and an RBI; Peterson had two singles; Ty Berridge had two singles and Blanchette and Maske both had two RBIs.

Satsuma 8, Daphne 5

Satsuma came back Saturday afternoon, however, to take the second contest in the twin-bill, beating the Trojans 8-5 as Noble earned the win on the mound for the Gators, going the distance in scattering six hits, striking out four and walking two. Noble was untouchable for most of the game as Daphne actually trailed 8-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Trojans scored five runs to make the contest appear closer than it really was.

Maske (now 1-2 on the mound) took the loss for Daphne.

"I thought Jake threw fairly well but he was a victim of bad luck and defense as we had some errors," said Hutchins.

At the plate, Maske tried to help his cause with a single and a three-run triple.
